Firefighter, Resident Injured in 3-Alarm Dorchester Blaze

The third floor was heavily damaged in a 3-alarm fire

One firefighter and a resident were hurt Wednesday when a building caught fire in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood.

A firefighter and a resident were injured in a 3-alarm fire in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood Wednesday morning.

The fire, which happened at a three-story building at 688 Columbia Rd. with a restaurant on the first floor and apartments on the second and third floors, has since been contained, according to Boston Fire officials.

NBC10 Boston has learned the firefighter suffered a serious leg injury as he was trying to get to the third floor over an aerial ladder. The injured tenant has since been released from the hospital.

Sky Ranger video from the scene showed multiple fire trucks at the scene, with fire crews on the roof of the building as firefighters on truck ladders poured water through broken windows on the third floor in an effort to tackle flames inside the building's roof and walls.

"All the fire damage is confined to the third floor. Probably some water damage to the first, I would imagine," said Boston Fire Dep. Chief Michael Doherty.

The restaurant at the location of the fire is Restaurant Laura, a Cape Verdean eatery, and the owner, Laura Correia, lives on the building's second floor. She said there's a lot of water damage in the restaurant and doesn't know when she'll be able to reopen.

In all, eight people were displaced by the fire, which caused about $750,000 in damages.

"I lost everything except for my passport," resident David Pacini said. "You know, we're going to have to take it one step at a time."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
