Investigation Underway After Dorchester Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 2 Injured

The shooting victim who died was found in a car along with a surviving victim, according to police

Police are investigating a violent night in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood that left one person dead and two others injured after a shooting.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Boston police received a shot spotter notification of shots fired on Astoria Street, where multiple shell casings were found. Officials then received a radio call about two people shot in a car less than a mile away on Dyer Street.

At the scene, officers found two people with gunshot wounds in a car. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the other, identified only as a male, was hospitalized. Police later received a report that a third person had brought themselves to a local hospital for gunshot wounds.

The extent of the surviving victims' injuries was not immediately clear.

Friday, police identified the victim who died as 18-year-old Myssiah Pledger.

Dorchester resident Jimmy Lebron said he had heard someone screaming outside his house.

"The only words that I heard, 'he can't be dead,'" recalled Lebron.

He said the violence in the area has him worried about his grandsons.

"I got grandsons, you know. It's kind of scary. You don't want to be involved in a shooting," said Lebron.

His wife, Idalia Saldana said she also heard the screams, which woke up the couple's 9-year-old grandson.

"I said, 'Oh, Lord, please bring consolation for that man," Saldana recalled.

At the Dyer Street location later in the day, the victim's friends stopped by to drop off candles in remembrance.

"He's just a really close friend, but I thank you guys for being here," said a friend of the victim who did not want to give her name.

Officials are searching for the gunman responsible for the shootings. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Boston Police Department's Homicide Unit at 617-343-4470. Anonymous tips can be made at 1-800-494-TIPS.
