A Massachusetts State Police trooper charged with assaulting his girlfriend has been ordered held without bail pending a hearing to determine whether he's a danger to society.
Trooper Robert Sundberg, a 14-year veteran, was arraigned Monday on charges of attempted strangulation and domestic abuse and was ordered back to court Wednesday for the dangerousness hearing.
Police say the 45-year-old trooper restrained and choked the woman early Saturday morning at their Boxborough apartment. Police say the woman waited until Sundberg fell asleep, then fled.
Sundberg's attorney says there were no visible marks on the woman and she made up the assault because Sundberg wanted to end their relationship.
Sundberg has been relieved of duty and his department-issued weapons and other equipment have been confiscated pending the outcome of the case. He has also been suspended without pay indefinitely.
