Broadside: Marathon With a Mission

Dr. Natalie Stavas talks about being recognized as a hero of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, and completing the race this year

(NECN) - In 2013, Dr. Natalie Stavas was recognized as one of the heroes of the Boston Marathon finish line when she ran into the smoke and chaos, ignoring police who told her to turn back on Boylston Street.

As a pediatric resident at Boston Medical Center and Boston Children's Hospital, her mission was to heal the horribly wounded.

Monday, Dr. Stavas ran her fifth marathon to raise funds for Sole Train, a youth running and mentorship program, and to declare victory over the forces that attacked the 2013 marathon.

"Honestly, I didn't know what I was running towards," she recalls about the 2013 marathon attack, "I knew people were injured. I knew my family was at the finish line and I knew I could help, or at least I thought I could help. I didn't know. I didn't know the horror which I was running towards. I don't think any of us could understand or even predict or fathom something that horrific."
