Mikaela Shiffrin finished a run for the first time at the 2022 Winter Games, but it wasn't fast enough to earn herself a medal.
After skiing out of her first two competitions in Beijing, Shiffrin completed her super-G run with a time of 1:14.30 on Thursday night. At the time, it was the eighth-best run of the single-run event, though she would ultimately finish in ninth.
Switzerland's Lara Gut-Behrami (1:13.51), Austria's Mirjam Puchner (1:13.73) and Switzerland's Michelle Gisin (1:13.81) finished in the three medals positions, with the 30-year-old Gut-Behrami earning her first Olympic gold.
"It was quite a big relief," Shiffrin said. "After the last days, what I expected from the feeling of the course is not how it went. I skied a little bit of super-G yesterday and went for the race today, and it felt really nice. It’s the one thing that makes a little bit of sense, that how I thought the trail was going to run, and how it might feel, was pretty much how it did, and I was able to handle it, which I was questioning a lot the last days.
"Today I proved to myself that I can still trust my instincts a bit. That’s really, really huge."
Shiffrin failed to finish each of her first two competitions in Beijing -- the slalom and giant slalom. This was the first time she competed in the super-G at an Olympics. Entering the Games, the three-time medalist was hoping to partake in all five individual alpine skiing events.

There were three other Americans in the super-G, with Isabella Wright coming in 21st, Keely Cashman coming in 27th and Alix Wilkinson failing to finish.
