The short-handed Atlanta Hawks were heavy underdogs vs. the Boston Celtics heading into Tuesday's NBA Cup opener at TD Garden. They overcame the absence of star Trae Young and squeaked out a thrilling victory over the reigning NBA champions.

The Celtics didn't do themselves any favors in their 117-116 loss. They turned the ball over 20 times and were dominated on the offensive glass, 20-6. Atlanta took 25 more shots than Boston did.

Jaylen Brown (season-high 37 points) and Derrick White (season-high 31 points) did their part in the losing effort. Jayson Tatum dropped 20 points but had an off shooting night, going 5-of-16 from the floor and 2-of-9 from 3-point range.

Dyson Daniels had a game-high 28 points with six steals for Atlanta. It was the 21-year-old's third consecutive game with at least six steals.

Boston will look to bounce back from its disappointing defeat Wednesday night when it visits the Brooklyn Nets.
