The Boston Globe Spotlight teams do a deep dive on the role of Court Magistrates in Massachusetts – the only state where such a system allows certain cases to be settled in private before making their way to the courts. This, despite the fact that 40 percent of the magistrates and their assistants (who also rule in some cases) lack law degrees, and one who didn’t even go to college!
